  New Zealand is replacing the Resource Management Act (RMA) with two new laws, a Planning Act for land use and a Natural Environment Act for resource management, aiming for faster development and better environmental outcomes with fewer consents, standardized plans (17 regional combined plans), and a focus on national standards and spatial planning, with transition in progress via recent amendments and proposed legislation. Key recent updates include extending existing consents until 2027/2031, introducing fast-track consenting for infrastructure, and updating national directions, with the new system expected to be fully operational around 2029.
