Pathfinder Projects

Welcome to the Pathfinder Project Programme

The Pathfinder Project Programme is all about good old Kiwi innovation...

People and Teams working together to discover better ways of building our world.

The programme has been established to create three things:

  • Firstly, a visible network of contacts for people who are striving to innovate - to connect them to each other.
  • Secondly to encourage culture of ‘sharing’ of knowledge across the industry
  • Thirdly to build a body of knowledge around innovation.

Project Kingfish

What happens when groundbreaking innovation meets an aggresive timeline? This Pathfinder looks at lessons to learn from the recent Air New Zealand's high tech. infrastructure build into live airports.

Whanganui UCOL

"Te aha te mea nui o te ao? - He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!" - What is the most important thing in the world? It is people! It is people! It is people!

Project sucess usually boils down to people - how they work together, are lead and motivated.

Alpurt B2 - Transit Print E-mail

Alpurt B2 - Transit

ALPURT B2 is the last stage of the realignment and extension of the Northern Motorway between Albany and Puhoi. It extends north from Grand Drive in Orewa to connect with the existing State Highway 1 route at Titford’s Bridge, Puhoi. ALPURT B2 will allow state highway traffic to bypass Orewa, easing traffic congestion in the town.

The construction of the motorway involves several engineering challenges, including:

  • A number of difficult geological formations
  • Steep mountainous terrain
  • The site’s location within an area of significant environmental value.

The motorway involves the construction of five culverts, twin tunnels at Johnson’s Hill, and six bridges along the 7.5 km stretch including three large bridges at Waiwera, Nukumea and Otanerua. Earthworks involve over three million cubic metres of material.

The National Bank Green Branch Print E-mail

The National Bank Green Branch, Blockhouse Bay, Auckland

The doors open on the first green retail building. This Pathfinder project shows there is no need to wait for a rating system to adopt green initiatives. With the willingness of the whole team, a multi-disciplinary approach and greater upfront planning, it is easy to incorporate sustainable features in building projects.

There have been great inroads in sustainable housing, public facilities, schools and offices, but little, if any, progress in the retail sector. This is concerning, since retail is a significant proportion of work in the building sector.

Recently, however, the new National Bank Blockhouse Bay opened its doors, becoming the first green retail building in New Zealand and, possibly, Australasia. This project provides a great example of how sustainable features can be incorporated into retail buildings.

The Plaza, Palmerston North Print E-mail

The Plaza, Palmerston North

Palmerston North is the setting for one of New Zealand’s first building information modelling 5D projects. Six months into stage 1, the team is impressed with its advantages

Building information modelling (BIM) has been around for several years, although it hasn’t been widely used in New Zealand. It enables  projects to be viewed from many angles in 3D. A more recent innovation internationally has been to link the model to the programme (4D) and to the cost plan (5D). These additional dimensions enable the project team to track the project ‘virtually’ forwards and backwards in time, play out ‘whatif’ scenarios and get to grips with complex logistics and buildability issues.

The Plaza Shopping Centre in Palmerston North is a $60 million fast-track project that started construction earlier this year. It involves a revamp of The Plaza Shopping Centre, plus a new strip centre with links to a 3-storey building that combines retail space and car parking. It was the contractor’s decision to introduce BIM to The Plaza with the full support of the client and design team.

5 Green Star Meridian Building Print E-mail
5 Green Star Meridian BuildingINNOVATIVESOLUTIONS

Meridian’s flagship for sustainability, the 5 Green Star Meridian Building sets a new benchmark for energy efficiency and sustainable building practice in commercial office property. This Pathfinder project case study offers lessons that could be useful for other projects.

With 4,000 m2 of office space over three levels, plus ground floor retail, the Meridian Building stands out as a flagship project. It was designed before the New Zealand Green Building Council was established, at a time when an environmental agenda was still off the radar screen for most people. However, the architect was convinced the project should lead in adopting environmental design principles.
